How do I get out of a downward mood spiral?

In mental health when people talk about spirals, they refer to their mood, which can often follow a downward spiral. This is usually a negative feedback loop. If we take social media, it can generate negative thoughts, emotions and even generate negative actions. These then feedback on themselves causing the person to feel even worse, prompting further social media use to try and make themselves feel better, which only leads to further negativity.
